How to read promo terms without getting lost in the fine print

Read five things: benefit, dates, qualifying spend, exclusions and redemption step. The rest can wait unless one of those points is unclear.

In shortDo not start at clause 1. Find the sentence that says what you receive, then scan only for the five details that decide whether the offer works for your purchase.

Find the actual benefit

Is it a percentage off, a fixed dollar amount, a gift, a points reward or a chance to win something? Keep those separate when comparing offers.

Mark the start and end

Look for both dates and times. An offer that says 'while stocks last' needs a different expectation from one guaranteed throughout a stated period.

Check the qualifying purchase

Minimum spend can mean one receipt, one day, one member account or one payment method. Do not assume smaller purchases can be combined.

Look for exclusions before you choose

Participating outlets, products, delivery, public holidays and other discounts are the usual deal-breakers.

Read the redemption step

Some offers require an app, a booking, a code at checkout or payment with a named card. Missing that step can make a valid offer unusable.

What to remember
  • Benefit, timing, qualifying spend, exclusions and redemption are the five lines to find.
  • 'While stocks last' is not the same as a guaranteed end date.
  • Save the official terms before you buy if the offer matters.
